About Rebel Speak

The name Rebel Speak is a play on Newspeak , the language used by the Party in George Orwell's novel Ninteen Eighty Four. Newspeak is closely based on English but has a greatly reduced and simplified vocabulary and grammar. In the novel it is described as being the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller every year. It was the aim of the totalitarian regime of the Party to make any alternative thinking —"thoughtcrime", or "crimethink" in the newest edition of Newspeak — impossible by removing any words or possible constructs which describe the ideas of freedom, rebellion etc. Rebel Speak, in contrast, promotes the use of language as a means of enhancing alternative thinking and the ideas of freedom and rebellion.
