Verb patterns

Grammar note
When a verb follows another verb it usually takes the infinitive with to, the -ing form, or with some verbs both forms are possible. Modal verbs are followed by the infiniive without to. There are no rules for these verb patterns. They must be learnt individually for each verb.
I enjoy watching science-fiction movies. (only -ing form)
We need to move more quickly. (to infinitive)
I like playing chess OR I like to play chess. (both forms are possible)
I can play the guitar. (modal verb)
