Listen to Mrs Hodge talking about her new neighbour.
Listen
I've got a new neighbour. She moved in four weeks ago. I know she has a job, because I see her leave the house every morning and come home every evening. She's a cleaner, I think. She always wears jeans and a T-shirt to work, so it can't be a good job, can it? Sometimes she arrives home late. I've never spoken to to her. She always says hello, when she sees me, but I don't say hello back, because nobody has introduced us yet. How can I speak to someone I don't even know?
Her boyfriend is living with her. I know it's usual these days, but I still don't like it, you know, boys and girls living together and not married. It's only a small flat. I don't know how two people can live there comfortably.
She had a party last weekend, you know. She invited fifty people! The noise! It went on all night. She said she was sorry the next day, but all night I ask you, I didn't sleep all night.
Oh, there's the door. I can see her going out now. She's going out with her boyfriend. I wonder where they're going. They're probably going to the pub and having a good time.
Now listen to Sally, the new neighbour, giving her version of events.
Listen
I moved into this flat a few weeks ago and I really like living here. There's only one bedroom and my brother's staying with me at the moment, because he's looking for a job.
I'm a web designer. It's hard work and the hours are long, but I really enjoy it. It's quite a well paid job. There's a relaxed atmosphere in the office and we can wear casual clothes.
The only thing I don't like much about the flat is one of the neighbours, Mrs Hodge, I think she's called. She's a bit strange. She never speaks to anyone. I always say hello to her and ask her if she's all right, but she never answers. Maybe she doesn't like young people much.
I had a party last weekend. It wasn't very noisy. There were about fifteen of us and we left to go to a night club at about 11:00. When I saw Mrs Hodge the next day I said I hoped we hadn't been too noisy, but as usual she didn't say anything. Wierd woman.
My brother and I are going to visit a friend in hospital this evening and then we are going out for a meal at the Indian restaurant.
